BUSINESS NEWS

  • Michigan Cream & Sugar Ice Cream Co. from Bay City opened its new shop at 122 S. Hamilton Street in Old Town Saginaw in March to bring scratch-made ice cream to the community. The shop uses Michigan-sourced cream and sugar—its fall hours run Tuesday through Sunday.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State lawmakers passed a final Michigan higher education budget that raised operational funds for public universities and community colleges and boosted tuition programs—such as the Michigan Achievement Scholarship—while shifting over 1 billion dollars from the School Aid Fund. Advocates say the plan did not meet key needs like school infrastructure improvements or updated financing for dual enrollment programs.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Oct. 2, students at St. Charles Community Middle and High School planted 20 trees including a Royal Raindrops crabapple that blooms red and white—funded by a Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant—to replace trees lost to tornadoes and an ice storm.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Sept. 24th, Davenport University freshman Julianna Scherzer, 27, and Midland resident Sandy Laughner+ helped deliver a baby in a Saginaw hospital parking lot when cries for help were heard; nurses later took over, and the mother and baby recovered and left the hospital two days later.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Colt Jolin ran for over 200 yards and helped Valley Lutheran win a close game by a score of twenty-three to twenty-two against Ithaca—earning him the Friday Night Hero honor.  MLive
  • Friday, the Reese Rockets beat Ubly 24-18 in the Big Thumb football matchup as Deegan Carter hit all three 2-point conversions—both teams scored three touchdowns and the conversions gave Reese the winning edge.  MLive
  • On Friday, Oct. 3, Saginaw United played their first game on a new field and beat Bay City Central 28-6—crowning Mel Washington as homecoming king and Amariay Babers as queen.  MLive
