  • Country Fresh donated 18,000 Giving Cow milk cartons to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan on Wednesday to help families with food insecurity in mid-Michigan — the shelf-stable cartons are designed for food pantries without refrigeration and will be distributed to provide a reliable source of nutrition.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • The Saginaw Fire Department held a fall fire safety event on Wednesday to show residents how to handle real fire conditions with its live burn building demonstration. Fire Chief Brandon Hausbeck said the event let firefighters practice rescue and fire suppression skills under realistic conditions—helping boost public safety.  Mid-Michigan NOW

  • An excavator is tearing into the remains of the Candlelite Bowling and Banquet building on Dixie Highway in Bridgeport Township after an April fire destroyed the structure—officials confirm no injuries.  WNEM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local musician Carl Otis Mosley Everett, called the Maestro, died Oct. 6 after fighting an illness and was loved for singing at funerals—loved ones planned a benefit concert at 6 p.m. Friday at Zion Missionary Baptist Church. His funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. to help pay medical bills.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School officials in Saginaw Township proposed a $169.2 million bond that will fund urgent renovations to update safety systems, classroom technology and infrastructure at eight schools—including a $67.6 million upgrade at Heritage High—while voters will decide on the proposal at the Nov. 4 election; officials warn that delaying these updates may incur higher repair costs later.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Work has begun on a long-term plan called the medical diamond to reshape Saginaw’s riverfront healthcare and business corridor. The project features a $15 million behavioral health clinic and a new regional hub for Tri-Star Trust following its groundbreaking yesterday—Consumers Energy is burying utility lines this fall and bids for road and sewer work will be released in spring for further improvements.  WNEM
  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services warns residents that smoking and vaping increase the risk of fire during Fire Prevention Month—statistics show smoking causes many fatal fires—and urges safe disposal of smoking materials to prevent danger.  WNEM
  • The Four Lakes Task Force will receive $9.8 million from the state budget signed on Tuesday by Gov. Whitmer to fund dam restoration after the failures in 2020—state officials noted that a webinar is scheduled Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. to discuss the funding impact—with Sanford Dam expected to be completed first.  ABC 12

  • The Saginaw County Health Department is offering free DIY radon test kits throughout October at Room 101, 1600 North Michigan Avenue in Saginaw to help residents check for radon—a gas linked to lung cancer that has no color, taste, or smell.  WNEM

  • Frankenmuth’s girls cross country team won the TVC Red race Tuesday at Freeland—Natalie Foltz ran the 5K in 18 minutes, 45.57 seconds and the Eagles scored 33 points while Freeland and Alma finished with 35 and 75 points respectively.  MLive
