  • A grassroots leader who feeds Saginaw residents is finding it harder to meet rising needs—she is calling on neighbors to help keep her program running.  WNEM
  • Homeowner Kate Warner won the 2025 SCENIC award for standout yard care at 2551 Hermansau Street—she accepted the honor on behalf of her late mother, a longtime educator and Master Gardener who inspired the home's beauty.  WNEM
  • Larry Gayton, a deacon whose family once crowded into a car to work on Michigan farms, is organizing a march to support migrants and refugees on Oct. 25—this event will start at 3 p.m. at Great Lakes Bay Health Center and end at St. Joseph Church in Saginaw.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • The Saginaw Arson Watch program is seeking more volunteers and funding ahead of Halloween—volunteers will patrol in pairs at the Saginaw Fire Training Facility on Bristol Road and earn small rewards as they work to keep arson risks low.  WNEM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Michigan Heroes Museum, the only museum for the state’s military veterans and astronauts, upgraded its climate control systems to protect its artifacts. Consumers Energy contributed over $46,000+ and the museum received a $39,000 grant+ to fund the energy-saving improvements.  WNEM
  • Carlos Ramet—an SVSU teacher who studies Ken Follett—will speak at Hoyt Library on Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. to explain how great novels are made and read from his new book in honor of National Novel Writing Month.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • General Motors raised its full-year earnings forecast and lowered its tariff cost estimate to a range of 3.5 to 4.5 billion after its third-quarter results beat predictions—shares jumped more than 9% before trading on Tuesday. GM will also review its electric vehicle plans as it invests in more U.S. production.  WNEM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hemlock Public Schools is adding Stop the Bleed kits to school buses to provide life-saving first aid in emergencies — the kits will soon be installed on buses to boost safety.  WNEM
  • Birch Run Area Schools leaders are asking voters to approve a $17.8M bond proposal on the November 4 ballot to fund safety upgrades, roof repairs, plumbing, and classroom expansion — taxes will remain the same in 2026 if the measure is approved. The proposal follows the rejection of a $41M measure in May and comes as voters consider similar plans by other local school districts.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials began planting trees at a former GM plant site in Saginaw as they convert the area into a nature preserve. The project is expected to boost local green space and improve environmental quality for residents.  WNEM

FINANCE NEWS

  • Tammy Carvey used ChatGPT to pick her Powerball numbers and matched four white balls plus the Powerball on Sept. 6 to win a prize that doubled to $100K with Power Play—she claimed her prize at the Michigan Lottery headquarters and said she planned to pay off her home and save the rest.  WNEM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents in Saginaw and Midland can drop off unused prescription medications at Kroger Stores on State Street in Saginaw and in Ashman in Midland this Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. — Local law enforcement will accept the medications at the stores while state police posts will also gather items, with a separate drop-off available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  WSGW

  • Millington and Harbor Beach renew a long rivalry for the first time since 1978 as Millington hosts Harbor Beach in the regular season. Harbor Beach holds an 11-1 record in 2024 + Millington enters with a 7-1 record as the defending Division 7 state champion.  MLive
  • Greyson Merchant—a sophomore at Ithaca—stepped in as quarterback after Gibson Rondy was injured and helped the team build a 6-2 record as they prepare for Friday’s season finale against Beal City.  MLive
