COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Catholic Diocese of Saginaw will host a march for migrants and refugees tomorrow at 3 p.m.—the group will start at Great Lakes Bay Health Center and walk nearly a mile to St. Joseph Parish where a bilingual mass led by Bishop Robert Gruss will follow at 4 p.m. with mariachi music accompanying the service.  WNEM

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Taste of Ireland will come soon to Temple Theater in Saginaw — the show will let audiences experience Irish culture and history through dance moves shared by performers Brittany Pymm and Cian Walsh.  Mid-Michigan NOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Heritage High School students in Saginaw Township revealed an MDOT plow with a design inspired by Rainbow Road from Mario Kart and the theme 'give plows space—it’s not a race.' MDOT said the project boosted awareness of road safety and transportation careers.  WNEM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said it received instructions from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service to pause November SNAP issuance until further notice due to a federal funding lapse—this delay puts 1.4 million Michiganders at risk of food insecurity while officials advise SNAP recipients to check with local MDHHS offices for updates.  WNEM
  • State House representatives today reviewed Queenie's Law, a proposed bill to ban painful dog experiments at Michigan public institutions. Sen. Paul Wojno said the measure would stop taxpayer dollars from funding tests that harm animals—while some researchers maintain the studies have advanced heart disease research.  Mid-Michigan NOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Men’s Health 1st, in collaboration with BWELL-Saginaw and Cardiovascular Health & Stroke Prevention, is launching the Know Your Numbers campaign to offer free screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, and prostate health at the Saginaw County Public Health Department on Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — healthcare professionals will be available for on-site consultations and guidance to help men take charge of their health.  WNEM
  • A group of volunteer prosthetists returned from Guatemala after spending a week building 30 prosthetics for 25 people in need, with Midland native Hogan of Mary Free Bed Orthotics and Prosthetics in Saginaw helping lead the mission. The team worked in ROMP’s clinic in Guatemala City and used extra creativity — using recycled bicycle parts — to craft limbs with limited resources.  ABC 12
  • McLaren Bay Region broke ground on a new $53.6M medical campus at Midland Road in Bay City, a two-story 50,000-square-foot facility with a freestanding emergency department and an Orthopedic Center of Excellence. The campus will open in phases — the first patient is expected in spring and the emergency department will open in summer to boost access to care in the region.  MLive
