COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Saginaw’s arson watch program has turned Devil’s Night into a safety effort by having volunteers patrol neighborhoods and help reduce fire risks. The program started after a severe 2006 fire season and now keeps fires low—only one arson incident was recorded in 2023.  Mid-Michigan NOW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dairy Queen is set to open a new Grill and Chill on 3300 Tittabawassee Road in Kochville Township, with construction expected to begin no later than next month after the planning commission approved the 1,946-square-foot site (including a drive-thru). The new location marks the chain's return decades after its previous outlet closed.  MLive
  • General Motors is laying off about 1,700 workers at its plants in Michigan and Ohio—1,200 from a Detroit electric plant and 550 from an Ohio battery plant—as slower electric vehicle demand forces the company to adjust production plans.  WNEM
  • Bavarian Blast Waterpark in Frankenmuth won the Leading Edge Award for creativity and innovation in the waterpark industry at the World Waterpark Association Symposium — the recognition honors the Bavarian Inn Lodge team for creating Michigan’s largest indoor waterpark and family fun center.  MLive

  • The K? Onda! Dia de Muertos event—set for Saturday, Nov. 1—will be held at the Platinum Creations Event Center.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saginaw Township Community Schools’ Hemmeter Elementary was ranked 14th best elementary school in Michigan by U.S. News and World Report — an honor that reflects strong academics and community support. The school enrolls 318 students and Principal Jim Bailey said the ranking shows the hard work of students, staff, and parents.  WNEM
  • Clio High School hosted a college and career fair Wednesday morning where students visited booths and talked with representatives from local businesses & community colleges.   • Delta College Women’s soccer team is gearing up for the postseason – they will defend their National Championship in upcoming games.  WNEM
  • Final Saginaw-area high school football rankings show Valley Lutheran ended its undefeated regular season with a Week 9 win over Unionville-Sebewaing—Midland Dow, Frankenmuth and Swan Valley each finished 8–1. The rankings reveal teams trending up as they prepare for upcoming games.  MLive
  • Saginaw-area athletes were recognized during the MLive Athlete of the Week poll that closed at 11 p.m. Monday—fans voted last week as standout efforts like Natalie Foltz’s 17:50 finish at Twin Brooks Golf Course highlighted the competitive fall sports season.
