- ➤ Economist Chris Douglas from the University of Michigan-Flint advised Michiganders to focus on essential payments—such as gas, groceries, car loans and mortgage payments—as the 31-day government shutdown has left federal workers without pay while new bills come due; he urged residents to speak with lenders or landlords if income gaps risk missing payments.
