COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Saginaw Hunger Solution Center nearly reached its $8.8 million goal to expand its facility that houses East Side Soup Kitchen and Hidden Harvest—plans include a new kitchen, enhanced storage, and a larger dining room to improve food distribution. The public campaign, launched in March, is expected to finish in coming weeks as early construction began by removing a block-long section of Thompson Street.  MLive
  • AAA is running its free Tow to Go program to help intoxicated drivers get home safely over Thanksgiving weekend in Michigan + 10 other states, with service available from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Monday.  ABC 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gordie’s Bar in Downtown Saginaw held its soft opening today at the historic Bancroft building—owner Ben Hyatt said his team worked since January to install a full-service kitchen for elevated bar food such as poutine. The soft opening will help fix kinks before its grand opening on Dec. 1.  WNEM
  • Jeff DeHaven, president and CEO of Digital Mitten, will carry the iconic Red Believe Star balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade today — the parade will air live on NBC and stream on Peacock from 8:30 a.m. to noon.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bay Chorale will mark its 60th anniversary with a holiday concert on December 5 at 7 p.m. at John Glenn High School in Bangor Township—featuring winter songs performed with the John Glenn Varsity choir.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A recall petition has been submitted for school board president Amy Morales plus petitions against three other board members who voted against extending Superintendent Mark Whelton’s contract are also pending at the County Clerk’s Office. Organizers must gather valid signatures from 25% of registered voters and a clarity hearing will review the petitions on Dec. 11.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lt. Gen. Heidi Hoyle, a standout athlete from Bay City Central, will retire on Dec. 31 after a 31-year career in the Army and leave her Pentagon role in Washington D.C. At a Nov. 21 ceremony in Washington D.C. — where family and colleagues honored her service — she thanked her long-time coach for early guidance.  MLive
