  • Consumers Energy said crews made their final overnight push to restore power for nearly a quarter million customers after freezing rain and high winds; the company expects outages to be fully restored by the end of tomorrow.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • Boxes-on-Break delivered 868 food boxes to local students during the 16-day school break, surpassing the planned 500 boxes. Over 100 volunteers and community partners + generous donations helped pack and deliver the boxes on Dec. 28 and 29.  MLive
  • After the fire at Jack's Fruit and Meat Market on Tuesday, Dec. 30, Excited Goat Coffee Company in Essexville offered free lunch to market employees to ease holiday stress — owner Josh Sharrow said it was a simple way to support neighbors.  Mid-Michigan NOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Venues in Saginaw, Midland and Bay City are preparing for New Year's Eve celebrations on Wednesday, Dec. 31. The Children’s Museum offers a countdown with crafts and games from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m while downtown events and dinner parties will feature music and comedy.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Castle Museum of Saginaw County hosted a STEM snow-cation event on Dec. 30 that let children build snowball launchers + study snowflakes, and it will host a lunch and learn on Jan. 13 to explore lumbering.  Mid-Michigan NOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Stephanie Chang introduced Senate Bill 764 to allow deaf and hard of hearing residents to request additional closed captioned movie screenings beyond a film's usual three-week run. The proposal is now before the Senate Committee for Civil Rights — Judiciary — Public Safety for further review.  ABC 12
  • Drivers across Michigan are starting the new year with a new gas tax system (designed to shift how road money is collected) that will fund transportation projects statewide.  WNEM
