CRIME NEWS

  • Jason Cabello, a 47-year-old man from Saginaw, is set to face trial for his alleged role in the 2003 murder and sexual assault of Jeanette Wilton near the Flint River — he faces charges of first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder and first-degree criminal sexual conduct that carry potential life sentences.  Mid-Michigan NOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saginaw Public Schools is requiring all middle school students to use clear backpacks for the 2025–2026 school year to improve safety at Saginaw and Thompson middle schools. Every student will get their first clear backpack for free at August orientation and extra bags can be purchased for $10 each — officials said.  WNEM

FINANCE NEWS

  • ELGA Credit Union and COPOCO Community Credit Union merged after COPOCO members approved the deal on July 21. The merger became official Friday — it combined resources to serve 108,000 members over 16 branches as COPOCO began converting to ELGA’s systems this summer through next spring.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MDOT will close northbound I-75 from Kochville to Wadsworth roads on Monday, Aug. 4 for a $2.9M repair project on the Zilwaukee Bridge that will last until Nov. 14—drivers must take I-675 and other detours and plan for delays.  WNEM
  • Saginaw settled a federal lawsuit with resident David Little for $500,000 after police arrested him for vandalism based on footprints despite conflicting witness accounts — U.S. District Judge Thomas L. Ludington approved the settlement on July 30.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Midland Dow and Midland High coach Frank Altimore died Tuesday at age 81—leaving a legacy with state titles in baseball and a state-championship football appearance. He coached for over 40 years with more than 400 wins and earned inductions into both Michigan High School Coaches Halls of Fame—cementing his impact on local sports.  MLive
